Painting by Roussetos Panagiotakis

Nowadays Europe, I would not say

that you are fortunate

and you will not feel the joy

that you once gathered

on the outskirts of Dykte

in a sacred grove

with ears ready for harvest

and laurels on your head

with the fruits of Love

and the apples of lust in your hands.

My beloved, you have not found a way

to get the anxieties and the knots

out of your mind yet.

In vain, you seek to hide

in the abyss you have created

in vain, because your temples are full of sacrifices

and lamentations echo in your ravines,

in vain, because the unexpected time has come

because I do hold the thunderbolt in my hand

do not forget that.

Your mind will always be back here in the nights

and here you will blow out your golden flame.

Be aware

at dawn you will not listen to any other hymns

elevating for you in the sky

and words from the divine depths

will not be uttered again

since your virtue floats in the mire

and you let your great glory sink

in a rotten ocean.

No, before your craving

for the new embrace is revealed.

No, before tying the white ribbon

to the bull’s neck

and washing with your tear

the blood and the sin

from thousands of wounds which you let

your selfishness open up.

No, before Zephyrus’* breaths

declare to the ends of the world

that you really wish to be mine,

to remain that very Europe of  mythology,

mine, in my own immeasurable universe.

No, even in my anger, I am generous with you,

I do not want you to behave with inflexible obstinacy

without keeping the identity I gave you,

not mortal, because I blew divine breath and light into you

intoxicated by the rosy velvet of your lips.

The coming centuries will detest you,

dead and obscure soul,

because History will ask the centuries.

How come that you forget your risk

to follow me throughout the journey.

Remember, daughter of the cedars of the East,

Europe, who were brought up by Phoenicia*

with white pap and honey,

when, upon arriving in Crete, I embraced you

while you had your eyes on the ground, blushed and shy.

Painting by Roussetos Panagiotakis

Crete blessed our union…

In May you can only look through the crack of memory,

when the poppies blossom in the plain,

they have the fluff of your lips

from the kisses and juices that watered the soil

and now, taking no account of

the precious moments you lived,

you want to wear

dishonourable wreaths with fake ornaments

and your volition is revengeful and unjust.

Painting by Roussetos Panagiotakis

Why do you not listen to the multitude of waves of the Aegean Sea

instead of longing for the tribulations and deaths of the peoples

contriving innumerable ways

to generate misery and ordeals.

You let the alleged leaders make decisions

without mercy, pitilessly,

but your leaders are not god-honourable

and you think you are sitting peacefully on the throne

but you do not hear that the war is crawling around you.

Europe, they are not Korybantes Kouretes*

who beat the cymbals,

it is not the dance of your initiation

and the songs are not those of the Muses.

It is barbarians’ sounds

who have an immense craving for wealth

and overglutted, they serve the Insult.*

They are the ones who contrive your death with impertinence

and they prepare a pernicious destiny for you at dawn.

Europe, who will wake you up from lethargy,

during your sleep, others plan wails and pains

the aspirants overestimated their capabilities

and believe that they are so great

that they can reproach even the gods.

They are bitter opponents with ill-gotten gains

who have insolently placed the sharing on the altar

but they will end up cursed and shameless

and will be effaced in the future.

As you are now, you do not deserve blossomed roses.

I hate your manners, but not you.

You do not have a sparkling glance any more

and the day has come that your glory terminates.

It has come with the whisper you refused to hear

and that whisper was mine.

The one which the South, through thousands of foliage,

tried to bring you with the moon

in an ornate basket

and the stars in the nets

to remind you of the foamed waves you passed

when your ivory body glittered

under the sun of Delos.*

The South had kept the aroma

from the wine you had and got drunk

to persuade you to be compassionate

but you, you have already surrendered

to the narrow pass of  Haryvdis.*

Tomorrow… Europe,

when you hear the rotten protest

from the door you closed,

you will come alone, a nameless suppliant,

and when you find yourself

in the narrow street of merciless need,

you will throw your chain in front of my feet.

My wounded statues lament

but not so much for their broken limbs

as for your sending them abroad to foreign lands

which you defined as their home.

You close your eyelids heavily

as if you do not realise

that Caryatids, Venus, Victory, Harpist,

my brave wounded Amazone

and all the other sculptured marbles

do not belong to any of your pedestals.

They are mine,

predestined to be crowned at my sacred altars

with purple flow from the chariot of the sun

announcing the righteous oath of honour and life

when the love of mortal people

elevates higher than the clouds and Olympus,*

than the immortal Love and the weft of Liberty,

forging the laws of the nation

on the anvil of truth

you will ask for a reward of virtue from me

but you will not receive it,

after all, which virtue,

you see, you are oblivious of the holy Gratitude

and I merely count the decapitated dreams.

What will become of you, if I let, all those I gave you away,

drift in the river of oblivion,

how you will articulate words about Love

and which remedy for the soul, with which words

and in which amphitheatres Democracy will be hymned

and how the elan will lead you to symposia.

Where melody, harmony and dance will find theatres

and how you will call your great orchestras.

Academy, philosophy, phenomena and thought

are gifts, dowries of civilisation,

because intellect is more valuable

than all the gold of the whole world.

Think about it, when you feel melancholy due to fear

where you will find the voice to recount it.

Nevertheless, I cannot renounce you

that’s why I have adorned a square for you

lighting ancient torches again,

at Dykte, my cradle, where for the first time

I gathered the joy and the emotion

of your flowery body

on my bed made of fine white marble.

It was at that time Europe that you won the greatest glory.

I offered you a seven-string lyre to listen to

so that you cannot stay away

and you can never be free to escape

from the burning lightning of your lust.

The golden eagle will solve the ancient oracle in the East

an unborn child will bring you the message

and you will longingly speak about your return

in the West with deeply thoughtful deeds

because the blind prophetess has given the answer through the years.

Then you will realise that you are trapped in an infernal struggle

because more evil seeds grow in your land

while you are defying the lurking danger.

You wander around as if you are carefree

wearing the vulgar cloak of arrogance,

the one which has alienated you,

and playing the paean of your self-destruction, insane,

while conversing with the dealers of death.

You will not find any other priestesses of pain to serve you,

in the circle of Love reconciliation sanctifies

and the thread is silver and gold of another coming.

I will stay here, hope endures

in the country where the light was born,

and wait, until you throw away the mask

and throw those dirty paper keys of the jailer into the fire

rather than the souls, as the mistakes you once made…

I will stay here, hope endures

in the country where the light was born,

and wait, I will make you an arch of Peace

with myrtle and vine branches

from the volcanic islands

because I want to save you from tyranny and derision.

I will stay here, hope endures

in the country where the light was born

and wait, in the full moon threshing-floors

here, where the heart and the mind

of the whole world awoke

come here Europe to listen to your future

right from the start.

Comments

  1. Zephyrus: He is the Greek god of the west wind. The gentlest of the winds, Zephyrus is known as the fructifying wind, the messenger of spring.
  2. Phoenicia: It was a thalassocratic ancient Semitic civilization that originated in the Eastern Mediterranean.
  3. Korybantes Kouretes: When Zeus was born, his mother Gaia took him to Crete and hid the child Zeus in a “ steep cave “. Korybantes beat the cymbals as intended to drown out the infant god’s cries, and prevent his discovery by his cannibal father Cronus.
  4. Insult: It describes behaviour that defies the norms of behaviour or challenges the gods, and which in turn brings about the downfall, or nemesis, of the perpetrator of insult.
  5. Delos: The island of Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece.
  6. Charybdis: It was a sea monster, later rationalized as a whirlpool and considered a shipping hazard in the Strait of Messina.
  7. Olympus: In Ancient Greek religion and mythology, Olympus was the home of the Twelve Olympian gods. The Throne of Zeus hosted solely him, the leader of the gods. From there he unleashed his thunderbolts expressing his divine wrath.
